Southwestern Spoils Senior Day for 'Roo Softball

The Austin College softball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader on Sunday, falling 17-11 in extra innings in game one before falling 16-4 in game two on the team's Senior Day. The 'Roos are now 5-26 overall this season.
The 'Roos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Sophia Hernandez blasted a three run homer, and after Southwestern got two back in the second and another two in the third to go ahead 4-3, Chelsea Delaney hit her second homer in as many days to tie things up heading into the fourth.
Austin College tacked on four runs in the fourth when Hernandez had an RBI single and Charlotte Trudell hit a three run double to make it an 8-4 game. That remained the score until the seventh, when Southwestern plated six runs to go on top 10-8, but the 'Roos forced extra innings when Jessica Baker drove in two runs with a single. However, Southwestern hit a pair of three run homers as part of a seven run eighth, and the 'Roos were only able to get one run back on an RBI by Mallory Rossmann to make it a 17-11 final.
Sam Matulis took the loss, going 6.2 innings, while Hernandez went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, and four RBI. Delaney finished 2-for-3 in the game.
In game two, Southwestern jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first, and after the 'Roos got one run back on a homer by Briana Hernandez, the Pirates plated four more in the second to make it 6-1. Southwestern plated one in the third and three more in the fourth to push it to a 10-1 game, but Austin College scored four runs in the fifth to cut it to a 10-5 game. Jenny Dowsey had a two run double in the inning.
Southwestern got those four runs back to make it 14-5, however, and the 'Roos were only able to get one run back in the sixth when Dowsey singled home Taylor Steelman to make it a 14-6 final. Sophia Hernandez took the loss for the 'Roos and Dowsey went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the 'Roos offensively.
