'Roo Softball Splits on SCAC Tournament Opening Day
The Austin College softball team cruised to a 14-0 win over Dallas before falling 9-2 to top seed Trinity on day one of the SCAC Tournament on Friday.
The Austin College softball team cruised to a 14-0 win over Dallas before falling 9-2 to top seed Trinity on day one of the SCAC Tournament on Friday. The 'Roos are now 10-29 overall and face the University of Dallas again today at 2:00 p.m.
Against UD, the 'Roos plated four runs in the first inning and then exploded for eight in the second to go up 12-0, and two more runs in the fourth made it a 14-0 game as the 'Roos ended the game in the fifth due to the mercy rule. Sam Matulis tossed a shutout four hitter, striking out five in 5.0 innings to earn the win.
Jessica Baker went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a double and Briana Hernandez and Taylor Steelman each went 3-for-4. Sophia Hernandez added a two run triple in the win.
Against top-seeded Trinity, the Tigers struck first with three runs in the third inning and added another run in the fourth. Austin College got two runs back in the fifth to make it 4-2 on a pair of RBI doubles from Baker and Briana Hernandez, but Trinity answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning and added four more in the sixth.
Sophia Hernandez surrendered nine runs on 14 hits in 6.0 innings of work to take the loss, while Baker and Briana Hernandez each had two hits in the loss.
If the 'Roos top Dallas today, they will take on the loser of the game between Trinity and Southwestern at 4:00 p.m. in the SCAC semifinals.
