HOUSTON, Texas - The Austin College softball team dropped both halves of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at the University of St. Thomas on Friday, as the 'Roos were unable to get any runs across while falling 12-0 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
The 'Roos were held to four hits in game one and none in game two as the Celts clamped down defensively after the 'Roos took them to 11 innings in the series opener on Thursday. In game one, St. Thomas wasted little time jumping out to a big lead, pushing nine runs across in the bottom of the first, and they never looked back from there. The Celts added three runs in the second inning to make it 12-0, and finished the game doing all of their offensive damage on just seven hits, instead taking advantage of three Austin College errors and eight walks drawn.
Lauren Trott took the loss for Austin College, giving up nine runs on just one hit with seven walks issued in 0.2 innings of work. Allison Hughes got the win for UST, going the distance in the five-inning game and scattering four hits with three strikeouts and zero walks. Tori Fowler, Chyrsi Hemby, Kassidy Bradshaw, and Jadyn Myers each had a hit for Austin College, in a game that saw no extra base hits for either team.
The Celts once again grabbed a big early lead in game two, getting five runs in the bottom of the first and adding another in the second to make it 6-0. Two more runs came home in the fourth to make it 8-0, and that's how things would end after five innings via the run rule. Austin College struggled defensively, committing six errors, as four of the eight runs scored by UST wound up being unearned. Hailie Swiatkowski absorbed the loss, going the distance for the 'Roos and giving up eight hits with one walk issued. Victoria Sossaman picked up the win for the Celts, throwing a no-hitter while giving up five walks with a pair of strikeouts. Ana Zozaya went 3-for-3 with a double to lead St. Thomas.
