SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team battled No. 5-ranked Texas Lutheran but came up short in both halves of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Sherman High, falling 8-1 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The 'Roos are now 4-9 overall and 4-7 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Game one saw the Bulldogs jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, as Taylor Vannett knocked in a run to open the scoring and Serana Gonzalez and Mia Landry each brought home a run. Austin College got on the board in the bottom of the second to trim it to a 3-1 game, as Zoey Harrell's double brought Ashlynn Brothers around to score.
However, that was the only run of the game for the 'Roos, while TLU added three more in the top of the third to make it 6-1, and Vannett drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The score remained 7-1 until the top of the eighth, when Chesley Swisher was hit by a pitch with the bases full. Lauren Trott took the loss for Austin College, surrendering eight runs - seven earned - on 14 hits in 6.1 innings of work, while Katelyn Howard went the distance for the win for TLU. Harrell and Reagan Brinkley had the lone two hits for Austin College.
The second game was scoreless through the first two innings, with the Bulldogs finally getting the scoring started with a run in the third as Vannett doubled to plate Riley Davila. Cady Bowyer knocked in a run in the fifth and Swisher added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 3-0 before Austin College got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of that inning, with an error allowing Brinkley to come home and make it 3-1.
Austin College looked poised to escape a bases loaded scenario in the sixth unscathed, but a defensive miscue with two outs kept the Bulldogs alive and Bowyer singled to the right side, bringing two more runs across to make it 5-1 and that's how things would finish. McKinley Hankins took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings, while Jordyn Joy got the win for Texas Lutheran and Jordyn Stuessy picked up the save.
Tori Fowler was 2-for-4 with a stolen base to pace the 'Roos, while Brinkley, Harrell, Jadyn Myers, and Piper Lindlau had one hit each. Caelee Clark had three hits and two stolen bases for TLU and Bowyer went 2-for-2 with three RBI.
