SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team held off a late rally by Dallas Christian College, coming away with a wild, 15-13 win on Wednesday evening at Baker Field. The 'Roos improve to 9-22 overall this season with the victory.
Dallas Christian struck first with three runs in the second inning, but Austin College would counter with a sacrifice fly by Cody Goggins in the bottom half of the inning to cut it to a 3-1 game. In the bottom of the third, Brett Taff would launch his fifth home run of the year, plating two runs and knotting things up.
The Crusaders would answer back with three more runs in the fourth to regain a three run lead at 6-3, but Oscar Gonzalez singled home a run and Michael Winterrowd scored later in the inning to bring the 'Roos to within a run. The 'Roos would plate five more runs in the fifth to take their first lead of the game, with Scott Gelbart's RBI double and a two run single by Gonzalez highlighting the big inning that made it 10-6.
Austin College's lead would grow to 15-6 in the following inning, as Goggins and Thomas Oberg each picked up an RBI and Gonzalez belted bases clearing double to center, scoring three runs and capping off the second straight five run inning for the 'Roos. However, Dallas Christian would strike back in the seventh with four runs to cut it to a 15-10 game, and three more runs came across in the eighth to pull the Crusaders to within two at 15-13.
Tanner Logsdon would come on in the ninth to shut the door on the DCC comeback, however, earning his first career save. Christian Thomas picked up the win in relief, surrendering three runs (all unearned) on two hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Gonzalez finished the game going 3-for-6 with six RBI, and Goggins went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Oberg and Taff each drove in a pair of runs in the victory.
