'Roos Finish Season with Win Against W&J
NORTON, Mass. - Joslyn Dimitri scored seven goals to lead the Austin College women's water polo team to a 14-8 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Sunday at the Balfour Natatorium in the fifth place game at the CWPA Division III Championships. With the win, the 'Roos wrap up their season with a record of 10-9.
NORTON, Mass. - Joslyn Dimitri scored seven goals to lead the Austin College women's water polo team to a 14-8 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Sunday at the Balfour Natatorium in the fifth place game at the CWPA Division III Championships. With the win, the 'Roos wrap up their season with a record of 10-9.
The match started as a back-and-forth battle in the first quarter. Dimitri opened the scoring at the 5:23 mark, but Washington & Jefferson quickly responded with back-to-back goals from Riley Gutierrez and Autumn Woollcott. Mikhaela Torres tied the game, and goals from Bianca Gallegos and a penalty shot by Dimitri helped the 'Roos take a narrow 4-3 lead by the end of the opening period.
Austin College began to pull away in the second quarter. Clara Koenig scored early in the period, and Dimitri took over the offense from there. She scored three goals in the final three minutes of the half, sending the 'Roos to the locker room with an 8-5 advantage.
The 'Roos tightened their defense in the third quarter, allowing just one goal to Washington & Jefferson's Emmie Ratcliff. Camila Diarte handled the offensive load for Austin College during the frame, scoring twice late in the period to extend the lead to 10-6. In the final quarter, Dimitri added two more goals, including her second penalty shot of the day, to cap off her massive performance. Torres and Gallegos each added their second goals of the game to secure the decisive 14-8 victory.
Dimitri's seven goals came on 13 shots, and she also recorded three steals and drew two exclusions. Diarte was a key playmaker, contributing two goals, two assists and two steals. Torres and Gallegos each finished with a pair of goals, while Koenig anchored the defense with a game-high five steals to go along with a goal and an assist. In the net, Ashley Easley made five saves for the 'Roos.
For Washington & Jefferson, Ratcliff led the way with three goals and drew five exclusions. Mackenzie Caron and Woollcott each scored twice, and Gutierrez facilitated the offense with a game-high three assists. Goalkeeper Lani Weaver stopped six shots for Washington & Jefferson, which fell to 9-9 overall.
